Division/Section Top FAQ's for 2011-2012

1) JO's will be held February 17-20, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah

a. The deadline for the 2011-2012 season is January 16, 2012.

2) USA Fencing National Championships will be held June 29-July 8, 2012 in Anaheim, Calif.

a. Deadline to submit Division II/III, Youth 14 Qualifying Reports for the USA Fencing National Championships will be May 7, 2012.

3) Dues rebates

a. For each membership processed in a quarter, the Division shall receive $3.00.

b. Per the USA Fencing bylaws the portion of dues rebates allocated to your division will be paid to your division's Treasurer on a Quarterly basis. In order for your division to be eligible to receive the rebate, the National Office requires your division to have filed an Officers report for the current membership year and all previous membership years and financial reports for all previous membership years. All division officers must be current USA Fencing members.

4) Deadline and Rules for voter eligibility

a. Per the USA Fencing bylaws only members whose applications and dues have been received by the National Office on or before February 1st of each membership year and who have attained their 18th birthday as of that date and who are considered to be members in good standing shall have the right to vote.

b. Please make sure that your competitive, and non-competitive members have provided the National Office with their birth dates before February 1. Otherwise, they will not be included on your voting list and will not be considered eligible to vote.

5) How to obtain lists/labels.

a. Per Executive Committee policy established 6-30-00, your division is entitled to up to four sets of lists and/or labels of your division members per membership year at no cost.

b. Additional lists or labels will be made available at $0.05 each for labels or $1.00 per page for lists.

c. To order your lists or labels you may contact Membership Services at the National Office at information@usfencing.org or 719-866-4511 ext 2.

6) Classification Rules

a. Only Competitive members (Competitive, Life, Life w/installment, Professional, Family, or One-Day) may earn classifications.

b. Non-competitive (Supporting) members may not earn classifications.

c. The Board has approved a restriction on awarding classifications at Youth events. The following is an excerpt from the minutes of the July 6, 2003 Board Meeting:

AMENDED MOTION: To allow classification changes for age restricted events U17 and below* at division, regional, and sectional tournaments only when they meet or exceed C1 criteria.

* for clarification, U17 and below refers to U17 and younger.

MOTION: THE BOARD APPROVED THE AMENDED MOTION UNANIMOUSLY.

7) Age Criteria for Open Events:

a. The USA Fencing Board of Directors has ruled that for any USFA competition that is not specific to an age group, an athlete must be at least 13 years old as of January 1 of the fencing season. The exemption to this rule applies to any fencer who is younger than 13 on January 1 but who is listed on the latest National Junior Point standings; then that fencer is allowed to compete in the USA Fencing competitions not specific to an age group. The athlete must meet any other criteria stated for that competition. Examples of such non-specific competitions are: "Open", "Unclassified", "A" competitions, "C" or under competitions, Team competitions of any category unless specified for juniors or similar age restricted category.

9) Certain electronic membership lists are available to you.

E-lists come in excel format and include your members' names, dates of birth, classifications, clubs and addresses. To obtain a list please contact Kris Ekeran at the National Office at information@usfencing.org.

10) The Board has an appointed liaison to assist your division.

The Division/Section Liaison can regulate disputes, answer boundary change questions, and assist in the formation of new divisions. The current liaison is Buzz Hurst. You may contact him at 619-584-2478.

11) With the passage of the new USA Fencing Bylaws, does my Division need to elect Congress Representatives?

No, the updated USA Fencing Bylaws eliminate the Congress.  The election of Board members is now vested in the general membership.

12) With the passage of the new USA Fencing Bylaws, does my Section need to elect a Section Representative to the Board of Directors?

No, the new Board structure no longer includes Section representatives.
