Bouwkamp and Zagunis Recognized in USOC Female Athlete of the Month for October

Two fencers, Catherine Bouwkamp (Fishers, Ind.) and Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.), placed second and third respectively in the October U.S. Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month voting. Bouwcamp was recognized for her bronze-medal finish at the Wheelchair World Cup in Poland. Zagunis, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was voted into third for claiming her first World Championship title in Turkey.

Gymnast Bridget Sloan (Pittsboro, Ind.) won the October U.S. Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month award. Her credentials were impressive for the accolades. As the lone returning member of the 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. gymnastics team, all eyes were on Sloan at the 2009 World Championships in the O2 Arena in London, England. The 2009 U.S. Champion shone in the spotlight and claimed the all-around title, edging fellow American Rebecca Bross. An impressive floor routine gave Sloan an all-around score of 57.825 and the World Championship title on Oct. 16. Sloan also placed sixth in the uneven bars final with a score of 14.600
