The following are descriptions of each of the seminars:
Fencing the Critical Touch
An examination of the mental game of fencing that blends the “zone” theory of modern sport psychology and the Zen philosophy of the traditional warrior. The unique challenges facing the competitive fencer will be reviewed with an eye toward preparation for the critical moment. This will include a detailed look at the role of decision making under pressure and the need to balance tactical analysis and instinctive action. The seminar will conclude with review of a set of principles for fencing the 14-14 touch, prepared by National Team fencers & coaches
The Zone & Sport Psychology
Psychological skills enable the athlete to translate training into competitive success. The seminar begins with a discussion of the “zone” and the psychology of high performance. It will include an overview of the five cardinal skills of mental training: (1) Relaxation-activation, (2) Concentration, (3) Imagery, (4) Self-talk, and (5) Performance routines. The seminar culminates with a self-assessment exercise designed to provide a look at psychological strengths and weaknesses, and concludes with discussion of strategies for developing a personalized mental training program.
Goal Setting: Road Map to Success
If sport is a journey, then goal setting charts the path to success. To train and compete successfully, the athlete must avoid the pitfalls and embrace the methods of goal setting. This seminar presents the seven key elements of effective goals setting: (1) Linking performance goals to outcome goals, (2) Setting challenging but realistic goals, (3) Using positive and specific language, (4) Collaborating and personalizing, (5) Integrating short and long term goals, (6) Assessing and adjusting goals, (7) Practicing self-acceptance. The seminar includes introduction to a self-assessment system to guide personal goal setting.

Mental Training: Competition Master Plan
Psychological readiness for competition is the key to turning training into competitive success. The seminar translates Zone theory into the practice of mental training techniques. It discusses how to incorporate mental skills (relaxation-activation, concentration, imagery and self-talk) into pre-competition, between bout, and between touch routines. The seminar will include practice of a pre-competition routine, followed by instruction on personalizing mental training. A self-guiding mental training script from this activity will be provided.
