Gerek Lin Meinhardt is the son of Kurt and Jane Meinhardt...He has one sister, Katie Meinhardt...Graduated from Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco, Calif. and UMOHS Online Distance Learning in 2008...Was commended as a National Merit Scholar with a grade point average of 4.3...Fences (foil) for the University of Notre Dame making "Dean's List" honors while majoring in business and finance...His hobbies include playing basketball and music...Has a collection of just about everything on his i-Pod...His favorite movie is The Departed and his favorite television show is Arrested Development...Considers his older sister Katie his role model because of her intense work ethic...He grew up watching his sister play basketball in gyms all over the country...Says he prides himself on being able to maintain a sense of humor even when things are difficult...Gerek was first introduced to the sport of fencing in October 1999 at the age of nine and a half...He competed in his first national competition at the age of 10 ½ (Y-10 & Y-12) at the NAC in Colorado Springs, Colo. in November 2000...Became the youngest men's foil U.S. National Champion in U.S. Fencing history when he won the 2007 U.S. Fencing National Championships at the age 16...Is also the only U.S. male fencer to make the USA National Cadet, Junior and Senior Team in one season, which he did in the 2006-07 season.
