Personal: Says he prides himself on being able to maintain a sense of humor even when things are difficult...Gerek was first introduced to the sport of fencing in October 1999 at the age of nine and a half...He competed in his first national competition at the age of 10 ½ (Y-10 & Y-12) at the NAC in Colorado Springs, Colo. in November 2000...Became the youngest men's foil U.S. National Champion in U.S. Fencing history when he won the 2007 U.S. Fencing National Championships at the age 16...Is also the only U.S. male fencer to make the USA National Cadet, Junior and Senior Team in one season, which he did in the 2006-07 season.
